What are Learning Communities?
Schreiner University’s learning communities seek to help students connect in a powerful and supportive way with others who share interests and goals. Students in learning communities work closely with peers, faculty, and professional staff who are unified by a desire to make connections and have experiences in and outside the classroom central to their education. The university offers Living and Learning Communities in which students live together in a reserved dorm wing or floor as well as Learning Communities which do not entail a residential component.
Why Should I Join a Learning Community?
Students who take part in learning communities typically maintain higher GPA’s and graduate in a timelier fashion. They are more connected to the university, their faculty, and their peers. Students in Learning Communities are usually highly motivated to be successful in college, more involved on campus, make more responsible choices about their overall health and well-being, and have the opportunity to make lifelong friends. Each Schreiner University learning community is led by kind and caring faculty members — ones carefully selected because of their own passions about their learning community — who want their students to truly thrive during their college experience.
Our Communities
The Career Explorers Learning Community was specifically created for undeclared students who are not entirely sure what academic field they want to major in or even what career they may wish to pursue after college. This learning community will help students answer some of those questions as together they explore a number of different possible paths with the director of career services at Schreiner University. This learning community provides undecided or “pre-declared” students with academic support and a strong sense of belonging, encourages the exploration of many different majors and careers, and helps incoming students make the successful transition from high school to college

This community will prepare future world-changers for careers in a global marketplace through engaging activities and coursework with an international focus. It will culminate in a summer study abroad experience to an exciting location. Learn more about the Global Scholars Living & Learning Community.
Interested in a health profession? This community focuses on your journey to that career. We will talk about forming an identity as a health care provider–what does it take to prepare for this career, and what kinds of skills…. And, …. medical ethics – such as, who decides if someone has a right to die? Most importantly we will support and assist you in your preparation for the next steps after you graduate from Schreiner University. If you are pursuing a health profession this community is for you!

Learning Support Services serves students who have been diagnosed with dyslexia, attention deficit disorder, or a specific learning disability in reading, mathematics or written expression.

The Mountaineer Leadership Academy is a four-year leadership community. As students progress through their freshmen, sophomore, junior, and senior experiences at Schreiner, they develop specific qualities of leadership that will serve them in their programs of study while also providing them a foundation of leadership that can be applied to their future work and their contributions to society.

This community intends to provide an enriching experience through exposure to the arts in a holistic context. Students can expect opportunities to experience performance and art as both audience and performer in music, dance, design, poetry and theater. Students will engage with art and performance both on and off campus and will explore how their experiences inform and shape their studies, their careers, and their communities. This is a living and learning community housed in the Trull Dormitory.

Schreiner Institute is a program designed to provide comprehensive support and programming for students working to receive a military academy appointment, those who wish to pursue a commission through ROTC, as well as active-duty military and veterans transitioning back into civilian life.

Schreiner Solutions Sober Living and Learning Community offers incoming students in recovery a safe, stable environment in which to thrive as they take on the sober college experience – joyous, happy, and free from addiction. This community emphasizes healthy, spiritual practices, firmly based in 12-Step recovery, as students, faculty, and staff support each other while engaging in completely clean and sober living. We will practice the principles we learned in early recovery in all our affairs, including in living a successful, fun, and healthy college life along the way. All majors are welcome to apply. Service work, weekly recovery meetings, nightly study halls, working with an approved sponsor, Big Book study sessions required. In addition, we will support one another as we maintain our sobriety by helping others. Fun monthly outings and other field trips included. Remember, “we are not a glum lot” – come enjoy your first year of (or return to!) college and work toward long-term sobriety and your degree in a supportive and loving community of other sober young adults just like you.
