How to Study Abroad

As you make decisions about studying abroad, consider the following options for each year you will be on campus:

Freshman Year

  • Consider traveling abroad on a faculty-led trip or alternate spring break.
  • Express your interest in global education to your advisor, professors, and family members.
  • Research global education programs offered at Schreiner University
  • Apply for a passport.
  • Educate yourself about course prerequisites (if any) for trips.
  • Act as a mentor for international students on campus.
  • Participate in multicultural programming events on campus.

Sophomore Year

  • Learn more about studying abroad at the Schreiner Experience Fair and program information sessions.
  • Discuss global education plans with your advisor, professors, and relatives.
  • Choose your program based on goals, needs, and interests.
  • Note application deadlines, plan a budget, and consult with the Office of Changing Global Society about travel options.
  • Apply to study abroad/away programs taking place in fall of junior year.
  • Travel on a faculty-led trip or alternate spring break.
  • Participate in multicultural programming events on campus.

Junior Year

  • This is the year that most students who study abroad/away will do so.
  • Apply to study abroad/away programs taking place in spring of junior year or fall of senior year.
  • Travel on a faculty-led trip or alternate spring break.
  • Act as a mentor for international students on campus.
  • Participate in multicultural programming events on campus.

Senior Year

  • Meet with the Office of Changing Global Society and the Office of Advising and Career Development for information on incorporating study abroad/away experiences into graduate school and career plans.
  • Apply to study abroad/away programs taking place in the spring semester of senior year.
  • Take part in an alternate spring break.
  • Tell other students about the benefits of international education.
  • Participate in the Academic Showcase.
  • Act as a mentor for international students on campus.
  • Participate in multicultural programming events on campus and apply for the Certificate of Changing Global Society, a part of the Schreiner Experience Coin of the Presidential Challenge Coin series

There are many trips that may be an option; consider which ones fit best with your major and interests!
