Texas Biomedical Research Institute is an independent, nonprofit research institute dedicated to eradicating infectious diseases. We believe that health starts with science, and our team works each and every day to ensure we are making the world a healthier place by understanding and combating diseases that impact all of us, from COVID-19 to the Flu and HIV to Tuberculosis. We are looking for a strong writer to join our team and help us communicate our intricate science to the world.

JOB SUMMARY – SCIENCE WRITER

The Communications and Marketing Science Writer is responsible for developing internal and external communications content and strategies to deliver information to various audiences of Texas Biomed, including donors, business partners, other scientists and internal constituents. Working closely with the scientific and veterinary staff at Texas Biomed, the writer will develop well-crafted, knowledgeable content material that explains scientific information in nonscientific language (AP or business writing styles) so as to educate, inform and persuade audiences to engage more closely with Texas Biomed. The writer works closely with VP for Communications and the communications and marketing team.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Collaborate closely with the scientific Subject Matter Expert (SME) to oversee, coordinate and draft assigned documents to support operational and strategic goals and ensure a consistent high quality throughout documents produced. Content to include but not limited to blog posts, website material, news releases, print articles for the Institute’s annual report and biannual Progress report, white papers, presentation talking points and fact sheets.

Provide editorial support, ensuring quality of all scientific content, with a focus on clarity, accuracy, and consistency while maintaining adherence to proper format and Institutional requirements

Initiate and manage multiple rounds of document review and ensuing revisions by proactively interacting with all levels of reviewers from SME to senior management

Work closely with the communications team to revise documents for the various medium to be used, including web, print, audio and video

Resolve conflicts and build consensus between all cross-functional groups and collaborators

Direct multiple overlapping projects at different stages and for different departments, contributing to overall process improvement

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in English or Journalism and 5-7 years of science writing experience. PREFERRED: PhD and/or other graduate degree or 3-5 years of experience is preferred. This position requires strong written and verbal communication experience and communication of biological sciences experience.

Writing: Requires excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills as well as the journalistic ability to source stories from scientists, veterinarians and others

Interview and Research: Requires strong interviewing skills as Science Writer will be interviewing staff to gather information and research skills to follow up on information needed to round out a story with supporting detail

Interpersonal: Involves interpersonal and relationship-building skills in order to work with communications, development, business development and scientific departments. Also, need to possess the confidence to deal with senior executives and explain communication techniques to them.

Digital skills: Familiarity with information technology, especially digital and video means of communication.

General – Strong attention to detail, Results-oriented, well-organized with the ability to handle ambiguity and nuance and independent ability to manage workflow at the direction of the VP for Communications

This is a full-time salaried (exempt) position. Texas Biomed business hours are Mondays through Fridays 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Texas Biomed is committed to a drug-free workplace. Pre-employment drug screen is required.
