The Social Science Research Council (SSRC) is an independent, international, nonprofit organization with an annual budget of over $20 million. The Council is devoted to the advancement of interdisciplinary research in the social sciences through a wide variety of workshops and conferences, fellowships and grants, summer training institutes, scholarly exchanges, research, and publications. SSRC’s Finance Department is looking for an organized and energetic staff accountant. In this position, you will perform a variety of professional accounting functions involving budgeting, reconciliations, and grant administration. The ideal candidate would have a couple of years of nonprofit, grant, government, or project accounting experience.

Responsibilities

Finance and Budgeting

  • Review monthly corporate card accounting and perform monthly follow-up and correspondence with staff on outstanding balances.
  • Reconcile and follow up on outstanding staff travel advances and reimbursements.
  • Distribute monthly summary reports upon close of previous month.
  • Distribute summary and detailed grant reports upon request.
  • Respond to staff queries.
  • Assist with various audit functions.
  • Prepare monthly allocations for postage, duplication, and telephone.
  • Maintain the telephone code database and the telephone accounting software.
  • Maintain the professional development, tuition reimbursement, and gym database. Approve payments for processing.
  • Create and post reclassification entries.
  • Create various invoices for program staff.
  • Administrative tasks including, but not limited to, file maintenance, creating and maintaining databases and spreadsheets, reconciliations, and various other projects within the Finance Department as needed.

Grants Accounting

  • Assist with review of proposed budgets for new grants.
  • Prepare financial reports to funders.
  • Set up new grants, record receivable and cash receipts in financial system.
  • Reconcile grants receivables monthly.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration with two years of experience using accounting software such as QuickBooks, Intacct, or GP Dynamics; MIP strongly preferred.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize daily activities to meet competing deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work well with others and collaborate effectively.
  • Good analytical, interpersonal, and email-writing skills.
  • Willingness to learn and adhere to Finance Department policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexibility to learn new skills and work on special projects on an as-needed basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in a nonprofit environment.
  • Previous grants administration experience.
